Question

What factors affect gas exchange in the lungs?

Open in App
Solution

Factors affecting the exchange of gases in the lungs are:–

  1. The thickness of the membrane: The thicker the membrane slower is the gaseous exchange.
  2. The surface area of the membrane: The larger the surface area, the faster the rate of gaseous exchange. This surface area is provided by the alveoli of the lungs.
  3. The difference in the pressure across the membranes: The greater the pressure gradient, the faster will be the gaseous exchange.
  4. Diffusion coefficient of the gas: Higher the diffusion coefficient, the faster the gaseous exchange.
