Question

What factors affect the rate of evolution?

Solution

Evolution:

The process by which modern organisms have descended from their ancestors, with changes in their allele frequencies, is said to be evolution.

There are four major driving forces of evolution:-

  1. Mutation:- The DNA sequence is specific to each and every organism. Sometimes it undergoes changes in its base-pairs sequence.
  2. Gene Migration:- Gene flow or gene migration refers to the movement of genes from one population to another.
  3. Genetic drift:- Genetic drift is a random process occurring that can lead to large changes in populations within a short period of time.
  4. Natural selection:- Organisms are able to survive and reproduce within the changing environmental conditions selected by nature while the ones that cannot survive are eliminated.

The rate of evolution also depends on the amount/frequency of genetic variation, mutation rate, and population size.
