Question

What happens during osmosis?

Open in App
Solution

Osmosis:

  1. The process in which solvent travels from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration through a semipermeable membrane is known as osmosis.
  2. The semipermeable membrane separates the two solutions.

Types of osmosis: There are two types of osmosis:

Endosmosis:

  1. When the solvent molecules move inside the cell because the solute concentration is higher inside the cell, osmosis is known as endosmosis.
  2. During endosmosis, the cell becomes turgid.

Exosmosis:

  1. When the solvent molecules move outside the cell because the solute concentration is higher outside the cell, osmosis is known as exosmosis.
  2. During exosmosis, the cell shrinks.
