Question

What happens if germination takes place in darkness?

Open in App
Solution

Germination:

  1. The ability of a seed to develop into a plant is termed germination.
  2. The conditions that are necessary for the germination of seeds are light, moisture (water), and atmospheric air, and the unavailability of these could lead to retarded plant growth.

In case the germination takes place in the darkness, the following consequences will occur:

  1. Seeds will not germinate well in absence of light.
  2. Light decomposes the carbonic acid gas, and releases oxygen, utilizing the carbon.
  3. This causes a hardening of all the parts of the seed, thereby preventing vegetation growth.
