Question

What happens if vasopressin hormone secretion decreases?

Open in App
Solution

Vasopressin:

  1. It is a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict and assists the kidneys in controlling the quantity of water and salt in the body.
  2. This regulates blood pressure and the amount of urine produced.

Function: Vasopressin, also known as an antidiuretic hormone, plays an important function in controlling osmolarity and hence the volume of water in the extracellular fluid (the fluid space that surrounds cells).

Decrease in the secretion of vasopressin:

  1. If the vasopressin secretion is low, it will cause the kidneys to discharge an excessive amount of water.
  2. This results in frequent urination, which can lead to dehydration and low blood pressure.
  3. This condition is called Diabetes Insipidus.
