Prophase accounts for over half of the mitotic division. The duplicated centrosomes start moving to the opposite ends of cells. The centrosomes radiate microtubules, which together with spindle fibres constitute mitotic apparatus. Condensation of chromosomes into compact structures are seen. Every chromosome that is replicated is now visible having two identical chromatids. These sister chromatids are held by centromeres. The nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappear. Prophase is followed by metaphase.
