What happens to the chromosome number when two gametes fuse in sexual reproduction?

Open in App
Solution

Sexual reproduction:

  1. Sexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that comprises two parents.
  2. In sexual reproduction, a gamete with a single set of chromosomes joins with another to form a zygote.
  3. So, a zygote which is produced from sexual reproduction grows into an organism made up of cells with two sets of chromosomes.
  4. When two gametes merge during sexual reproduction, the chromosomal number is restored to its original value.
  5. When the nuclei of the gametes fuse to produce a fertilized egg or zygote, the future baby will have 23 chromosomes from each parent.
  6. Thus, the future baby has a total of 46 chromosomes.
  7. Meiosis allows a species that reproduces sexually.
  8. Meiosis keeps a constant number of chromosomes by half the number of chromosomes in the reproductive cells.
