Question

What happens when only PS I is functional?

Open in App
Solution

Photosystem:

  1. Photosystems are the part of photosynthesis that absorbs light energy from the sun.
  2. Photosystems consist of a reaction center and an antenna complex.
  3. There are two photosystems on the basis of the different absorption wavelengths of the chlorophyll.
  4. The two photosystems are Photosystem I and Photosystem II.
  5. When PS I is functional, the electron is circulated inside the photosystem and phosphorylation takes place as a result of a cyclic flow of electrons.
  6. When PS II is functional, execution of photosynthesis occurs in higher plants, algae, and cyanobacteria.
  7. Thus, when PS I is functional, the transfer of electrons occurs using light energy.
