Hormones:

  2. These specialized glands are known as endocrine glands.

The hormone secreted by the heart:

  1. An atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is the hormone that is secreted by the human heart.
  2. Brain natriuretic peptide is another hormone produced by the heart which is also called a ventricular natriuretic peptide.
  3. This is secreted by the human heart when there an increase in ventricular blood volume.
  4. The function of ANP is to reduce the plasma volume by increasing the renal excretion of sodium ions.
  5. ANP hormone also lowers the blood pressure by vasodilation hence reducing the cardiac load.
