Acetogenesis:

  1. A stage in the anaerobic digestion in which the reduction of carbon dioxide and organic acids takes place.
  2. During acetogenesis, acetate is formed by the oxidation of products of acidogenesis by microorganisms called acetogens.
  3. Acetogens are anaerobic bacteria that use acetyl Co-A pathway to produce acetate from sugar and organic compounds.
  4. Example of acetogen is Clostridium.

Thus, acetogenesis is production of acetate.
