Somatostatin:

  1. Somatostatin is a hormone produced by nervous and digestive systems tissues, found in the hypothalamus.
  2. Somatostatin hormone prevents the release of pancreatic hormones such as insulin, glucagon and gastrin, and pancreatic enzymes which help in digestion.
  3. In the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, somatostatin reduces gastric secretion.
  4. Hence Somatostatin is also known as growth hormone inhibitory hormone (GHIH) as it inhibits the release of growth hormone.
