Question

What is bilateral symmetry with example?

Open in App
Solution

Bilateral symmetry:

  1. It is generally defined as body symmetry where the body can be divided into two identical halves in only one plane.
  2. The right & left sides of the body are exactly the mirror image of each other.
  3. This is characteristic of organisms that are free moving.
  4. An example of bilateral symmetry is seen in human beings.
  5. The line of symmetry running longitudinally (from head to tail) through the center divides the body into two similar parts externally.
  6. The distribution of the internal organs does not follow the symmetric pattern. E.g. Annelids, Arthropods, Molluscs, Chordates, etc.
Humans display bilateral symmetry. Which of the following organisms show a similar pattern of symmetry?
