  1. Peptidoglycan is a rigid outer covering of the cytoplasmic membrane of bacterias.
  2. It forms the outermost layer in gram-positive bacteria. Lipopolysaccharides form the outermost layer in gram-negative bacteria.
  3. It helps in the protection of bacterial cells from environmental changes due to its resistant nature.
  4. It also helps in preserving cell morphology in the entire life cycle.
  5. Peptidoglycan is also an important regulator of bacterial cell division.

Hence, the cell wall of bacteria is made up of peptidoglycan.
