Question
What Is Compliance And Stiffness?
Open in App
Solution
Compliance:
The change in volume relative to the change in pressure is referred to as compliance.
In a compliant heart, there might be an increase in volume with a significant change in pressure.
To avoid pulmonary congestion, diastole causes the ventricles to fill with enough blood at a low enough pressure.
Stiffness:
Stiffness is a measurement of pressure change vs volume change.
To allow for a bigger capacity, a stiff heart increases pressure over usual.
Pressure is excessively high for the amount of volume in stiffer ventricles.
Compliance and stiffness are inversely proportional.
