Question

What is detritus in an aquarium?

Open in App
Solution

  1. An aquarium is a clear water tank that houses live fish, other aquatic organisms, and plants.
  2. Detritus is dead organic stuff that can accumulate on the bottom of an aquarium (tank), such as bits of dead creatures or fish faeces.
  3. If detritus is left unchecked, these components can build up, causing nitrate and phosphate levels to rise, resulting in algal outbreaks.
  4. These algal outbreaks can lead to oxygen deficiency that can cause the fishes in the aquarium to die.
  5. These algal outbreaks also block the filters of an aquarium thus, one should keep a check on detritus formation within the tank.
