Question

What is difference between diffusion and osmosis?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Osmosis is the movement of solvent from the lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration, till both the solution reaches an equilibrium solute concentration.
  2. The process of moving particles from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration is called diffusion.

Osmosis
Diffusion
1. Osmosis occurs in a semi-permeable membrane.
1. Diffusion occurs without any membrane.
2. Only diffusion of solvent molecule takes place.
2. Allows the diffusion of both solute and solvent molecules.
3. Osmosis occurs only in the case of liquid medium.
3. Diffusion occurs in solids, liquids and gasses.
4. Movement of particles occurs in a single direction.
4. Movement of particles can occur in all directions due to absence of any membrane.
