  1. Diatoms come under the kingdom Protista. They are photosynthetic Protists.
  2. Photosynthetic protists are mainly unicellular eukaryotic algae, called protistan algae.
  3. Photosynthetic protists are mostly planktonic i.e., they grow and cover the surface of the water body and move on the mercy of water currents.
  4. Diatom is the collective name of the golden-brown photosynthetic protists. Diatoms are unicellular, microscopic, photosynthetic organisms of various colors, and diverse forms.

Frustule:

  1. The cells of diatoms are called frustules.
  2. The cell wall is chiefly composed of cellulose impregnated with glass-like silica.
  3. It shows sculpturing and ornamentation.
