Gastric pit:

  1. Gastric pit is defined as the several depressions in the mucous membrane which lines the stomach into which gastric gland secretions are discharged.
  2. These are the entry points to the gastric glands.
  3. At the base of each pit, a narrow passage that continues into the opening of the gastric gland is present.
  4. The lining of the pits is covered with surface mucous cells which produce mucus.
  5. The mucus protects the epithelial cells from acids.
