Question

What is Graham's law of diffusion?

Open in App
Solution

Graham's law of diffusion:

  1. It was formulated by Scottish physical chemist Thomas Graham in 1848.
  2. Graham found experimentally that the rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass of its molecular mass.

Rate1Rate2=Mm

  1. Here, Rate 1 is the rate of diffusion of the first gas (volume or number of moles per unit time).
  2. Rate 2 is the rate of diffusion of the second gas.
  3. M is the molar mass of gas 1.
  4. m is the molar mass of gas 2.
