Question

What is mRNA?

Open in App
Solution

Messenger RNA (mRNA):

  1. mRNA was named by Jacob and Monad.
  2. Messenger RNA or mRNA is a single-stranded molecule of RNA.
  3. It helps in the process of protein synthesis through translation.
  4. In the cell, out of the total RNA formed, about 5-10% is mRNA.

Formation of mRNA:

  1. mRNA is formed during the process of transcription.
  2. An enzyme converts the gene into primary transcript mRNA.
  3. This pre-mRNA still contains introns, which are then removed by RNA splicing.
  4. This exon sequence forms the mature mRNA. It is then read by the ribosome and then the ribosome creates the protein.

Role of mRNA:

It helps in carrying protein information from the DNA where the mRNA sequence is read and the three base codon is translated into its corresponding amino acid.
