Primary follicle

  1. The appearance of one or more cuboidal granulosa cells arranged in a single layer surrounding the oocyte defines a primary follicle.
  2. FSH receptor expression, as well as oocyte proliferation and differentiation, are major developmental events in the main follicle.
  3. A primary follicle is a follicle with two layers of follicular cells.
  4. These cells continue to grow and multiply, forming numerous layers around the oocyte.
  5. These cells eventually become known as granulosa cells. After ovulation, the granulosa cells secrete progesterone.
