Irish famine is also known as the potato famine or the great famine of 1845.
It took place in Ireland, resulting due to potato crop failure in successive years.
The crop failures were caused by late blight disease.
In this disease, the leaves and the tubers (edible roots) were destroyed.
The deaths due to the Irish famine were estimated at about one lakh.
