Definition:

  1. Homologous chromosomes are pairs containing the same gene along the same length and the same loci.
  2. One homologous chromosome is usually inherited by the mother and the other is inherited by the father.
  3. Homologous chromosomes have same gene but they might have different alleles.
  4. Humans have 22 pair of homologous autosomal chromosomes with same gene but code for different traits in their allelic form.

Function:

  1. Important in the process of mitosis and meiosis.
  2. Allow for the recombination and produce new combination of genes.
