Question

What is special about the Cladophora life cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Cladophora :

  1. Cladophora is indeed a genus of Ulvophyceae with reticulated filaments (green algae).
  2. Cladophora comprises a large number of species that are difficult to distinguish and categorize, owing to the wide range of appearances that are influenced by habitat, generation, and environmental factors.
  3. The filaments of such Cladophora branch, unlike those of Spirogyra, do not undergo conjugation.
  4. A haploid gametophyte, as well as a diploid sporophyte, are two multicellular phases in its life cycle that seem quite similar.
  5. The only method to distinguish between the two stages is to measure their chromosomes or look at their children.
  6. Mitosis creates haploid gametes in the haploid gametophyte, and meiosis produces haploid spores in the diploid sporophyte.
