Question

What is the end product of lipolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Lipolysis:

  1. Lipolysis is a process in which fats or triacylglycerols-TAGs break down through hydrolysis, enzymes, and water and gives glycerol and free fatty acids (FFAs).
  2. Lipolysis occurs in the adipose tissue.
  3. It is used to mobilize the stored energy during fasting or exercise and is used by cells.
  4. The energy released in the lipolysis process is captured in the form of 1 GTP and 11 ATP molecules per acetyl-CoA molecule oxidized.
  5. Hence, the end product of lipolysis is fatty acids and glycerol.
