  1. It is a sphincter that controls the outflow of urine from the bladder into the urethra.
  2. There are 2 types of urethral sphincters in the body, namely the external and internal urethral sphincters.

Internal urethral sphincter:

  1. This is located at the junction of the urethra and the urinary bladder and made up of smooth muscle
  2. It helps in the regulation of involuntary control of urine flow from the bladder to the urethra.

External urethral sphincter:

  1. It is made up of skeletal muscle
  2. It helps in providing voluntary control of urine flow from the bladder to the urethra.
