Blastocyst:

  1. A blastocyst is a rapidly dividing ball of cells that forms after three days of fertilization and contains about 6 to 10 cells by the sixth day after a sperm fertilizes an egg.
  2. It's the early stage of an embryo.
  3. The blastocyst is made up of an inner group of cells with an outer shell.
  4. The outer group of cells called a trophoblast will become membranes and help in nourishing and protecting the embryo.
  5. The group of cells attached to the trophoblast is called the inner cell mass or embryoblast.

Fate of inner cell mass:

  1. Immediately after implantation of a blastocyst, the inner cell mass differentiates into ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm.
  2. These three layers give rise to all tissues in adults.
