Open in App
Solution

Nitrogen cycle:

  1. The biogeochemical process in which many forms are obtained from nitrogen by passing from the atmosphere to the organism of the soil and back to the atmosphere.
  2. There are totally five steps involved in the nitrogen cycle.
  3. The five steps in the nitrogen cycle are: Nitrogen fixation, Nitrification, Assimilation, Ammonification, and Denitrification.

Nitrogen fixation:

  1. Nitrogen fixation is the first step in the nitrogen cycle.
  2. It is the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen or dinitrogen into utilizable compounds.
  3. There are two methods of nitrogen fixation:- biological and abiological.
  4. Biological nitrogen fixation is a major source of nitrogen fixation.
  5. it is performed by prokaryotes, bacteria and cyanobacteria.
  6. This includes both free-living and symbiotic forms.
  7. Abiological fixation is of two kinds:- natural and industrial.
  8. Industrial biological fixation is a process in which ammonia is produced directly by the combination of nitrogen and hydrogen.
  9. It is done at a high temperature and pressure.
  10. Natural biological fixation is a process where nitrogen combines with oxygen.
  11. It is done in the presence of electric discharges.
