What is the function of corpus luteum?

Corpus Luteum:

  1. It is formed from the collapsed follicle wall that contains the granulosa and theca cells.
  2. Granulosa lutein cells form the thick folded layer around the former follicular cavity.
  3. Corpus Luteum is a glandular yellow body that developed from the ruptured Graafian follicle after the release of the ovum.

The function of the Corpus Luteum:

Secretion of hormones:

  1. It acts as a temporary endocrine gland.
  2. They secrete large quantities of Progesterone and small quantities of Estrogens.

Maintenance of Pregnancy:

  1. If pregnancy occurs the corpus luteum remains active for the 3 months and maintains the pregnancy by secreting various hormones.
  2. Abortion results if the corpus luteum is removed in the early weeks of the pregnancy.
