Question

What is the function of the cytochrome?

Open in App
Solution

Cytochromes:

  1. Cytochromes take part in redox reactions and electron transport.
  2. Redox-active proteins known as cytochromes include a heme, which has a central Fe atom at its center, as a cofactor.
  3. By reducing or oxidizing their heme iron, cytochromes can undertake electron transfer processes and catalysis.
  4. The function of cytochromes determines where they are located within the cell.
  5. They exist as globular proteins and membrane proteins.
  6. A globular cytochrome cc protein takes part in the transport of electrons from membrane-bound complex III to complex IV during oxidative phosphorylation.
