The lateral line system is a peculiar system of sense organs present in aquatic animals while in amphibians the lateral line system occurs only in larval forms.
This system is composed of neuromast structures arranged in an interconnected network.
There are present rheoreceptors that help to detect pressure and vibrations in the surrounding water.
Rows of neuromasts appear on the surface of the skin however for most fishes, they lie embedded in the floor of mucus-filled structures called lateral line canals.
