Solution

Corpus Luteum:

Corpus luteum is formed after ovulation. The ruptured Graafian follicle transforms into the corpus luteum. The Corpus luteum is important to maintain pregnancy. It releases progesterone, which is required for the maintenance of the endometrium during implantation and later events in pregnancy.

Life span of corpus leteum if fertilisation does not occur:

  1. The corpus luteum is limited to around 14 days if the event of fertilization does not occur.
  2. Towards the end of this period, degeneration of the gland begins and hence menstruation takes place.
  3. There is a shrinkage of the corpus luteum, the fibrous tissue is formed and then converted into a tissue appearing as a scar referred to as the corpus albicans that persists for some months.
