What is the main function of smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic Reticulum:

  1. The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a network of membranes that is present inside eukaryotic cells. These structures are responsible for the production and transportation of proteins, fats and other essential molecules required for the functioning of a cell.
  2. When ribosomes attach to the surface of an ER, it gives a characteristic rough appearance; hence it is called Rough ER (RER). On the other hand, a Smooth ER (SER) does not have ribosomes on its surface.

Functions of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum:

  1. It helps in synthesises of glycogen, lipids and steroids.
  2. It helps in the formation of spherosomes/ Oleosomes (small cell organelles that take part in synthesis and storage of lipids).
  3. It provides vesicles for cis-face of Golgi apparatus.
