Question

What is the most efficient form of respiration?

Open in App
Solution

Respiration:

  1. Respiration is a metabolic biochemical process that occurs in all living cells of an organism to create energy through the intake of oxygen and the liberation of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of various organic molecules.
  2. The energy created is adenosine-triphosphate, or ATP, commonly known as the energy molecule.
  3. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration are two types.
  4. Aerobic respiration is respiration that happens in the presence of oxygen.
  5. Anaerobic respiration is respiration that happens in the absence of oxygen.

An efficient form of respiration:

  1. There are mainly two forms of respiration namely: aerobic and anaerobic.
  2. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to create energy from food whereas anaerobic works without oxygen.
  3. Aerobic respiration produces around 6 times more energy compared to anaerobic respiration.
  4. The ATP yielded in aerobic respiration is about 38 molecules by complete oxidation of a single glucose molecule.
  5. On the other hand, anaerobic respiration produces only 2 ATP per glucose molecule.
  6. Thus, the most efficient form of respiration is aerobic respiration.
