Question

What is the pathway followed by the ovarian arteries?

Solution

Ovarian artery:

  1. The ovarian artery is the artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood to a woman's ovaries.
  2. It is a long pair of blood vessels that run throughout the body to supply blood to the ovaries and uterus.
  3. The main function of these arteries is to supply blood through a series of branches.
  4. These branches are named after the structure that supplies blood.

Pathway is as follows:

  1. They are a pair of structures that arise from the abdominal aorta. They originate from the abdominal aorta below the renal arteries and are also found in the ovarian veins and the ovarian suspension ligaments in the front of the ureters.
  2. Coming from the aorta, they travel down the ovarian suspension ligaments, then into the mesovarium, and then join the broad ligament uterine artery.
  3. The ovarian arteries present in women correspond to the arteries of the testicular arteries in men. These arteries are usually shorter than the testicular arteries.
  4. The origin and pathway of the first part of each artery are the same for men and women, but when it reaches the upper opening of the small pelvis, the ovarian artery curves inward.
  5. It is located between the two layers of the ovarian pelvic ligament and the broad ligament of the uterus and is distributed in the ovaries.
  6. Branches – The ovarian artery is made up of small branches that connect the uterus and fallopian tubes, one of which flows along the sides of the uterus and joins the uterine artery.
  7. The other side runs through the inguinal canal, primarily along the girdle of the uterus, and then to the labia majora and inguinal skin. Function-The main function of this artery is to supply blood to the ovaries and uterus.
  8. These arteries swell during pregnancy and increase blood flow to the uterus.
