A double phospholipid membrane or a lipid layer is known as a plasma membrane.
A plasma membrane has non-polar hydrophobic tails that point towards the inside of the membrane and the polar hydrophilic heads form the outer and inner surfaces of the membrane.
The plasma membrane forms the boundary of the cell, separating the internal metabolic contents from the external surroundings.
Functions of the plasma membrane:
Plasma membrane provides protection to the cell.
It provides a fixed environment inside the cell.
It transports nutrients into the cell
It also transports toxic substances out of the cell.
It is selectively permeable i.e. it allows specific molecules to pass in and out of the cell.
