Question

What is the process of protein metabolism?

Open in App
Solution

Protein metabolism:

Protein metabolism entails the creation of proteins and amino acids, known as anabolism, as well as the breakdown of proteins into amino acids, known as catabolism.

Process of protein metabolism:

  1. Transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications are all processes in protein synthesis.
  2. In the translation process, ribosomes use the mRNA template to synthesise proteins, which are then modified post-translationally.
  3. Non-essential amino acids are synthesised from citric acid cycle intermediates.
  4. Essential amino acids must be ingested and produced by other species.
  5. The amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds to form a polypeptide chain.
  6. This polypeptide chain is subsequently subjected to post-translational changes and is occasionally linked to additional polypeptide chains to produce a fully functioning protein.
  7. Various enzymes and hydrochloric acids found in the gastrointestinal system first break down dietary proteins into specific amino acids.
  8. These amino acids are absorbed into the circulation and transferred to the liver before being distributed throughout the body.
  9. Absorbed amino acids are commonly utilised to make functional proteins, but they can also be used to generate energy.
