Solution

The pulmonary volume of air:

  1. The amount of air inhaled or exhaled during regular breathing is referred to as tidal volume (TV).
  2. The additional air that can be breathed in by forcible inspiration is known as inspiratory reserve volume (IRV).
  3. The excess air that may be breathed out by violent expiration is known as expiratory reserve volume (ERV).
  4. When a person forcefully exhales, both the TV and the ERV are ejected from the lungs.
  5. When a person inhales naturally following forcible expiration, the amount of air inhaled is equal to TV+ERV.
