Question

What is the role of contractile vacuole in amoeba?

Open in App
Solution

1. Amoeba is a unicellular organism that has the ability to change its shape. They are usually found in water bodies such as ponds, and lakes.

2. The contractile vacuole complex is an osmoregulatory organelle of amoeba which controls the intracellular water balance by accumulating and expelling excess water out of the cell, allowing cells to survive under hypotonic stress as in pond water.

3. Contractile vacuoles in the amoeba are involved in excretion and osmoregulation.
