Sometimes, burns are assessed and expressed in words of the size of the total area that is affected.
This is called the rule of nines that links particular anatomical regions with a percentage that is a factor of none. Also, burns can be categorized by their degrees of severity:
First-degree burn- affects the epidermis only.
Second-degree burn- deeper, affecting the epidermis and some part of the dermis.
Third-degree burn- extends fully into the epidermis and dermis. It destroys the tissue and affects the sensory functions and nerve endings.
Fourth-degree burn- affecting underlying muscles and bones.
