Question

What is the structure of a prokaryotic cell?

Open in App
Solution

Prokaryotic Cell:

  1. Prokaryotic cells are those that lack a clearly defined nucleus and any organelles that are linked to membranes.
  2. Prokaryotes are prokaryotic organisms, which are often single-celled bacteria.
  3. Bacterial cells, which have a variety of forms and architectures as well as extrachromosomal DNA known as a plasmid, are an example of prokaryotic cells. Extreme settings like hot springs, as well as soil and marsh, include archaeal cells, which resemble bacterial cells. Plasmids are also present in these single-celled creatures.
  4. Prokaryotic cells are not intricately designed objects. The genetic material is portrayed as coiling in the cytoplasm of the cell rather than being confined within a real nucleus or a membrane.

Major Prokaryotic Cell Components:

  1. Glycocalyx: Made up of macromolecules, it is a component of the cell envelope or capsule in some prokaryotic cells.
  2. Mesosomes: These are lamella or tubular extensions of the cell or plasma membrane.
  3. Inclusion bodies: A prokaryotic cell's cytoplasm is home to inclusion bodies, which function as containers for reserve materials.
  4. Chromatophores: These membrane extensions with photosynthetic pigments are only seen in cyanobacteria.
