Dinoflagellates :

  1. Also known as fire algae, they are a kind of unicellular algae that are found inhabiting both freshwater & marine ecosystems.
  2. These entities are also capable of bioluminescence as they generally produce a chemical compound that has the potential to generate light when they react.
  3. This process is stimulated when dinoflagellates come into contact with any object, other organisms, or even water movement by waves.
  4. They can also glow due to a dip in temperature.
  5. They use the process of bioluminescence as a defensive mechanism against predators. They produce a glowing blue colour.
  6. Noctiluca and Gonyaulax are examples of dinoflagellates.
