Zona reaction:
Zona reaction is referred to as the modification of the zona pellucida in response to fertilization, which altered the solubility and binding properties of the zona pellucida, and led to a slow block of polyspermy.
- The acrosome is said to be a cap-like structure that is present at the head of the sperm.
- It usually contains several proteolytic enzymes like hyaluronidase and acrosin.
- The acrosome reaction is also very essential for the interaction of the male and female gametes.
- This reaction is also required for penetration of sperm by the zona pellucida of the ovum and then enters the cytoplasm of the ovum.
- This reaction is also responsible for the completion of meiotic division in the secondary oocyte.
- The Graafian follicle is referred to as the stage after the first meiotic division has completed but right before ovulation.
- The secondary oocyte undergoes the first meiotic division and is located eccentrically.
- It is surrounded by the zona pellucida and a layer of several cells said as the corona radiata.
