Question

What macromolecule will your body break down first in order to get ATP?

Open in App
Solution

ATP synthesis:

  1. Adenosine Triphosphate is an energy molecule that carries chemical energy synthesized in the body.
  2. Carbohydrates are preferred and broken down to synthesize ATP molecules.
  3. Glucose is a key carbohydrate that is metabolized via glycolysis and undergoes oxidative phosphorylation to generate ATP molecules.
  4. In glycolysis, monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose are broken down to generate pyruvate, ATP, NADH, H2O, and hydrogen ions.
  5. The pyruvate molecules generated are further subjected to Krebs cycle where it is broken down to generate 36 ATP molecules.
