Solution

Gibberellin:

  1. Gibberellin is a plant growth-regulating hormone.
  2. They are derivatives of terpenes or gibberellic acid.
  3. Gibberellin regulates the growth and development of plants.
  4. Gibberellin helps in elongation of the stem, germination of seed, flowering, etc.

Functions of gibberellin:

  1. Gibberellin plant hormone mainly stimulates stem elongation by stimulating cell division and elongation of internodes.
  2. Gibberellic acid (GA) controls internode elongation in the mature regions of plants.
  3. The dwarf plants do not make enough active forms of GA.
  4. Flowering in biennial plants is controlled by GA.
  5. Biennials grow for one year as a rosette and after the winter they bolt due to the rapid expansion of internodes and formation of flowers.
  6. It breaks seed dormancy in some plants.
  7. It stimulates the alpha-amylase and other hydrolytic enzymes during the germination of monocot seeds.
  8. Also stimulates the germination of pollen and growth of pollen tubes.
  9. They can cause parthenocarpic (seedless) fruit development or increase the size of seedless fruit (grapes).
