Question

What types of cells would have more mitochondria?

Open in App
Solution

Mitochondria: It is a double membrane-bound cell organelle that is the site for energy production as it synthesized adenosine triphosphate which is crucial for all bodily activities.

Importance of mitochondria:

  1. Mitochondria are involved in the process of oxidative phosphorylation where ATP is generated.
  2. ATP is used as chemical energy for all the biological processes or reactions in living organisms.

The cells having more Mitochondria are as follows:

  1. Heart cells
  2. Liver cells
  3. Brain cells

Heart cells:

  1. In our body heart muscle cells contain more mitochondria.
  2. The heart requires more energy for the continuous pumping of blood throughout the circulatory system.

Liver cells:

  1. The liver is considered one of the largest internal organs.
  2. The liver performs metabolism and hence has high energy demands.
  3. Metabolism requires more energy, and it is provided by the liver mitochondria.

Brain cells:

  1. The brain is the highest energy-dependent organ as the entire functioning of the body depends on it.
  2. The energy required by the brain is provided by the mitochondria as they are the powerhouses of the cell.
