Question

When are spores in mosses formed?

Open in App
Solution

Spores:

  1. These are called the most conspicuous in non-seed-bearing plants, including liverworts, hornworts, mosses, and ferns.
  2. In such lower plants, as in fungi, spores function much like seeds.
  3. In general, the parent plant sheds the spores locally; spore-generating organs are also frequently located on the undersides of leaves.
  4. In mosses, after fertilization, the zygote develops into a sporophyte consisting of a foot, seta & capsule.
  5. The sporophyte in the mosses is more elaborate than that in liverworts.
  6. The capsule contains spores.
  7. Spores are also formed after meiosis and develop into a new gametophyte.
