When is milk produced during pregnancy?

Open in App
Solution

Lactation:

  1. Lactation is the process of producing and releasing milk from the mammary glands of the breasts after the birth of a baby.
  2. At the time of 4 weeks of pregnancy, a complex web of milk ducts and milk-producing cells called lactocytes starts forming.
  3. The milk secreted by mammary glands is highly nutritious for newborn babies.
  4. During pregnancy, the breasts of the mother grow up to 46%.
  5. Lactocytes start working at around 15 weeks of pregnancy.
  6. But the milk production cycle only begins once the baby is born.
  7. Lactation begins in pregnancy when hormonal changes signal the mammary glands to make milk for the baby.
  8. It is also possible to induce lactation without a pregnancy using the same hormones that stimulate the body to produce milk during pregnancy.
  9. Lactation ends once the body of the mother stops producing milk.
