  1. Post-exposure prophylaxis is also called post-exposure prevention.
  2. PEP treatment stops HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection after the HIV virus has entered a person's body.
  3. PEP medication must be taken within 72 hours of exposure to the virus.
  4. If PEP is taken after 72 hours of exposure to the virus, it is ineffective.
