Where can the turgidity of cells be observed?

Open in App
Solution

Turgidity:

  1. Turgidity is a biological condition in which cells swell as a result of absorbing a lot of fluid.
  2. The cells absorb water, which is then stored in vacuoles and causes swelling.
  3. When placed in a hypotonic solution, cells receive fluids inside due to endo-osmosis, this creates outward pressure and the cell is turgid.
  4. Turgor pressure refers to the force the expanding protoplast exerts against the cell walls in plant cells.
  5. Turgidity pushes plasma membrane against the cell wall.
  6. A cell is referred to as turgescent when the cell membrane rubs up against the cell wall.
  7. The turgidity of a cell can be seen in its cell membrane or plasma membrane.
